Grammy winning artist and cultural icon Erykah Badu will play the Grove of Anaheim on June 2. Badu is known worldwide for her incredible fusion of jazz, hip hop and R&B and musical styles deeply entrenched in African American roots.
Multi-talented Erykah Badu hypnotized the music scene in 1997 with her double Grammy-winning debut album Baduizm which debuted at No. 2 on the national charts; the highest debut of a new female artist at that time. Her style drew immediate comparisons to legends such as Billie Holiday, and later to Bessie Smith, Marvin Gaye and other prominent African American artists. By coupling her diverse training in performance and visual arts with her sociopolitical and philosophical consciousness, Erykah Badu has continued to carve out and transform R & B music into a positive force to be reckoned with. Badu has gained notoriety as highly uplifting, conscious performer dedicated to increasing awareness about issues facing the urban community while continually evolving her musical styles.
In 2008, Erykah released New Amerykah Part One (4th World War), the beginning of an album series tackling current sociopolitical issues while pulling musical styles from the ‘40s, ‘50s, and ’60s. AllMusic.com states, “Immediately moving and yet rather bewildering, New Amerykah, Pt. 1 is an album that sounds special from the first play.”
