I recommend taking the ferry across the harbor! You get to pull your car on board and take a relaxing trip across the harbor on the famous ferry. Upon landing on Balboa Island, you have many options, and will need to decide what to do. There are rides and games for kids, shops and restaurants for the family, and of course, sun, sand and surf for everybody to enjoy. Use caution though during combination swells coming in from the south/south west and west. When this occurs, big waves come crashing in along the jetty and close to shore. These monsters are no joke. People get hurt attempting to ride these, so if youre not an expert I suggest watching from the sand. These big waves form up by wedging together, hence the more commonly used name of this beach area is "THE WEDGE." Rental shops are there to provide to those who are visiting and want to try fishing, surfing, biking and so forth. If youre visiting for the day, take a walk around the harbor side of balboa and learn a little bit of history of the area.
